The New Marvel and Sony Spider-Man Deal Explained
What’s Next for the MCU and Tom Holland?
Marvel and Sony have finally sorted out their custody battle over Spider-Man, and the new contract is changing everything. With the massive release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the hype is officially back. The new movie is already tracking to absolutely destroy the box office with a $250M+ opening weekend.
How the Profit Split Works Now:
If you look at the business side of things, the Marvel Disney Sony box office deal profit split is a massive win-win. Marvel gets to keep total creative control and easily slide Peter into the bigger MCU storyline, while Sony gets a guaranteed billion-dollar safety net. Because of this smooth partnership, Tom Holland is essentially locked in as a major anchor for the multiverse saga.
Streaming Loopholes:
Spider-Noir and TV RulesThe coolest part of the new contract is how they are handling streaming. Sony is still super strict about live-action TV rights—which is why you won’t see Tom Holland showing up on Disney+ shows like Daredevil: Born Again. But they found a brilliant loophole. Instead of standard network TV, fans can now stream Spider Noir series prime video to watch Nicolas Cage play a live-action, gritty version of Ben Reilly.
Mark Ruffalo’s Solo Movie Pitch:
Peter isn't entirely on his own though, as Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk drops in to play a major role in the film. But the coolest news comes from behind the scenes. Director Destin Daniel Cretton recently let slip that while working together, Ruffalo actually pitched him several personal ideas for a standalone Hulk movie.
According to Cretton, Ruffalo's pitches are "pretty good". While a solo film has always been trapped in a nightmare of complex studio rights, knowing that the Brand New Day director is actively vibing with Ruffalo's ideas gives fans a major glimmer of hope for a future World War Hulk project.
Moving Away From Bad Spin-offs and Doubling Down on Gaming:
Sony’s solo villain movies like Madame Web and Morbius completely tanked. Insiders say Sony is finally listening to the fans and pausing those random live-action spin-offs to focus on what actually works. Beyond the movies, their biggest goldmine is the gaming universe. Fans can already prepare for brutal claws-out action with Marvel's Wolverine, officially locked in for a September 15, 2026 launch, which will share the same universe as the Spider-Man games.
