Walmart Grocery Settlement: Who Can Submit a Claim?

Did You Buy Groceries at Walmart? You Might Be Owed Money.

Were you a frequent shopper at Walmart between October 2018 and January 2024? If you bought certain items, you could be eligible for a payout from a recent settlement.

The settlement stems from a class-action lawsuit alleging Walmart overcharged for some weighed grocery items. This included meats like beef, chicken, and pork sold by the pound. It also potentially included other produce weighed at checkout, like certain fruits and vegetables.

Here's the good news: You don't need a receipt to claim your share of the settlement money. Even if you don't remember the specifics of your purchases, you can still file a claim.

Who is eligible?

Anyone who purchased weighed goods or bagged citrus fruits in person at a Walmart store in the United States or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, is potentially eligible. This covers Walmart supercenters, neighborhood markets, and regular retail stores.

How much money can I get?

The amount you receive depends on how many weighed items or bagged citrus you bought. Here's a breakdown:
  • 1 to 50 weighed items or bagged citrus: $10
  • 51 to 75 weighed items or bagged citrus: $15
  • 76 to 100 weighed items or bagged citrus, or any amount of bagged citrus: $20
  • Over 101 weighted items: $25
It's important to remember that these are just estimates. The final amount you receive could be more or less depending on how many people submit claims.

How do I claim my money?

The deadline to submit a claim is June 5, 2024. You can file your claim online on the settlement website. The website also has a downloadable claim form you can print out and mail in.

There are two ways to submit a claim:

Without receipts: This is the simplest option. You'll just need to answer some questions about your shopping habits at Walmart during the claim period.

With receipts: If you have receipts showing you bought weighed items or bagged citrus, you can submit them for a potentially higher payout. The receipts should show the weight and price of the items.

What if I miss the deadline?

Unfortunately, if you don't submit a claim by June 5, 2024, you won't be eligible for any payout from the settlement.

Is there anything else I need to know?

The settlement has been approved by a court, but there's still a final hearing scheduled for June 12, 2024. If the court approves the settlement at the hearing, checks will be mailed out to eligible claimants within three months.

This settlement is a reminder to keep an eye out for similar cases in the future. If you think you might have been overcharged by a store, there's a chance you could be part of a class-action lawsuit and get your money back.
