Golden Temple, Sri Harmandir Sahib: Gurdwara in Punjab
Travel: The Golden Temple (also known as the Sri Harmandir Sahib) is a gurdwara in the Punjabi city of Amritsar, India. It is Sikhism's most important spiritual site. Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, finished the man-made pool on the temple grounds in 1577. Guru Arjan placed "Adi Granth" in Sri Harmandir Sahib in 1604.

The Golden Temple, with its complete golden dome, is one of the Sikhs' most important pilgrimage sites. The gurdwara is a two-story edifice built on a 67-foot square of marble. The upper portion of the structure was constructed with around 400 kg of gold leaf by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
It is located in the city of Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab and is the biggest attraction here. The entire Amritsar city is situated around the Golden Temple. Thousands of devotees and tourists visit the Golden Temple every day. Amritsar is actually named after the lake, which was built by Guru Ram Das himself with his own hands.

This Gurudwara is situated in the middle of this lake. The outer part of this Gurudwara is made of gold, hence it is also known as the "Golden Temple". The map of this gurudwara, about 400 years old, was prepared by Guru Arjun Dev Ji himself. This Gurudwara is a unique example of craft beauty. Its carving and external beauty are done on sight. There are doors all around the Gurudwara that open in all four directions (East, West, North, and South).
There are two major and several smaller shrines in the Sri Harmandir Sahib complex. All these pilgrimage centres are spread around the reservoir. This reservoir is known as Amritsar, Amrit Sarovar, and Amrit Lake. The entire Golden Temple is made of white marble, and its walls are carved with gold leaves.

In the langar, complete arrangements are made for food and drink for the devotees visiting the gurudwara. This langar is open to devotees 24 hours a day. The arrangements for food and drink are made from the offerings coming to the Gurudwara and other funds. The arrangements for food and drink in the langar are made by the servitors appointed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee. They contribute in every way to the service of the people (sangat) who come here.
It is estimated that about 40 thousand people take the prasad of the langar here every day. Not only food, but there is also an arrangement of accommodation for the people visiting the Gurudwara here at Shri Guru Ramdas Sarai. This inn was built in the year 1784. There are 228 rooms and 18 large halls. Mattresses and sheets are available here to spend the night. There is a complete arrangement for one person to stay for three days.
