NASA's Parker Solar Probe to make its second closest approach to Sun
NASA's Parker Solar Probe was launched last year to collect data from the Sun's corona. It the first probe to have gone this close to the host star of our solar system. Now, the probe will be making its closest approach ever by a man-made spacecraft. It will be reaching 15 million miles of the Sun's surface.

Trivia :

Parker Solar Probe is a NASA robotic spacecraft launched in 2018 and currently en route to probe the outer corona of the Sun. It will approach to within 9.86 solar radii from the center of the Sun and by 2025 will travel, at closest approach, as fast as 690,000 km/h, or 0.064% the speed of light.

  • Launch date: 12 August 2018
  • Cost: 150 crores USD (2018)
  • Manufacturer: Applied Physics Laboratory
  • Contractor: United Launch Alliance
  • Reference system: Heliocentric orbit
  • The Parker Solar Probe will have a mission life span of 7 or more years.

Science Goals :

  • The goals of the mission are:
  • Trace the flow of energy that heats the corona and accelerates the solar wind.
  • Determine the structure and dynamics of the magnetic fields at the sources of solar wind.
  • Determine what mechanisms accelerate and transport energetic particles.
