Changing Aspect Ratio in iMovie: A Simple Guide
Tutorial: Changing the aspect ratio in iMovie depends on whether you’re using it on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Check out our simple guide. Here’s how to do it for both:
On Mac:
Method 1: Change project aspect ratio:
- Open your iMovie project or create a new one.
- Click on File > Project Properties.
- In the pop-up window, choose your desired aspect ratio from the Aspect Ratio dropdown menu. Options include 16:9 (widescreen), 4:3 (standard), or Square.
- Click OK. This will change the aspect ratio for all next clips you add to the project.
Method 2: Crop individual clips:
- Select the clip you want to edit in the timeline.
- Click on the Crop and Zoom icon (looks like a magnifying glass).
- Drag the corners of the overlay box to adjust the framing of your clip within the chosen aspect ratio. You can also use the Zoom slider to fine-tune the framing.
- Click the blue Reset button in the top right corner to apply the crop.

Author’s Notes:
Remember, changing the project aspect ratio will affect all clips added later, while cropping only affects the individual clip you’re editing.
Be aware that changing the aspect ratio might cut off some parts of your video depending on the original footage.
Consider the platform where you plan to share your video when choosing the aspect ratio. For example, 16:9 is ideal for YouTube and most online platforms. Square is popular for Instagram.
