It is the studio's 47th animated movie and is partially based on William Joyce's 1990 children's book A Day with Wilbur Robinson.

Daniel Hansen, Jordan Fry, Wesley Singerman, Angela Bassett, Tom Selleck, Harland Williams, Laurie Metcalf, Nicole Sullivan, Ethan Sandler, Tom Kenny, and Anderson provide the voices for the movie. The movie was produced by Dorothy McKim and directed by Stephen J. Anderson (in his feature directorial debut), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Don Hall, Nathan Greno, Joe Mateo, Aurian Redson, Jon Bernstein, and Michelle Spitz.

The 47th animated film produced by the studio, it is loosely based on the 1990 children's book A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce.

Meet the Robinsons follows the interactions between Lewis (Fry), an orphaned 12-year-old inventor desperate to be adopted, and Wilbur Robinson (Singerman), a young time-traveler who travels to the year 2037 for visit the family. Along the way, the two must prevent a mysterious bowler-hatted man (Anderson) from changing Lewis' story, and, by proxy, the entire future.

The El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles hosted the Meet the Robinsons world premiere on March 25, 2007. On March 30 in the US, it was made available in both regular and Disney Digital 3-D formats. The animation and plot won accolades from critics, who gave the movie generally favourable reviews. With a $150 million budget, it failed miserably at the box office, earning only $169.3 million.

Over 600 REAL D Cinema digital 3-D theatres screened the Disney Digital 3-D version of the film.In every theatrical screening, the 1938 Mickey Mouse short film Boat Builders and the 1953 Chip 'n' Dale 3D short Working for Peanuts were shown before the normal and 3D versions of the movie, respectively. Except for the names of the people who made the 3D conversion, the final credits of the 3D edition were left in two dimensions.

On October 23, 2007, both the DVD and Blu-ray editions were made available. The 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, deleted sequences, and additional extras are included in both editions. Anderson's narrative can be heard in the DVD's audio commentary.
