How did Rishi Markandeya became Chiranjeevi?
The story of Markandeya becoming Chiranjeevi is in the Uttarakhand of Padmapuran, according to which-
Mrkandu Muni pleased Lord Shiva by doing severe penance with his wife and by his boon found Markandeya in the form of a son. Shiva had asked Mrkandu, 'Do you want a son with a long life or a virtuous son with a young age?' Then Mrkandu wished for a virtuous son.
Lord Shiva had determined the age of Markandeya to be 16 years. When the sixteenth year of Markandeya began, the father was filled with grief. On asking the reason, when the father told Markandeya the story of the young age, he took the permission of the parents and went to the coast of the South Seas and set up a Shivalinga and started worshiping. Kaal or Yamraj arrived at the appointed time to defeat his life.
Then Markandeya said that I am doing the eulogy of Lord Shiva with Mahamrityunjaya Stotram, complete it, then stop. But Kaal did not listen and wanted to force Markandeya to suffer. At the same time, Mahadev appeared from the Shivling and roared like a cloud with a shout and hit the chest of Kaal with feet.
After this incident, Shivji got his name as Kalantaka because he not only protected Markandeya's life by ending the period, but also pleased him with his devotion and made him free forever.
