Man falls 70 feet into volcano, Survives
A man survived a 70-foot fall into the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island after he climbed over a railing to get a better look at the cliff edge, authorities said.
The rescue personnel found him alive but seriously injured on a ledge below the cliff's edge.
Rescue personnel successfully completed a high angle extrication using ropes and stokes litter and, with support from a Department of Defense helicopter, the man was airlifted to Hilo Medical Center for urgent care."
Kilauea, which is not currently erupting, is among the world's most active volcanoes.
A volcano is a mountain that has, or had, lava (hot, liquid rock) come from a magma chamber under the ground. Volcanoes are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. Most volcanoes have a volcanic crater at the top. when a volcano is active, materials come out of it.
